Wishes a happy new year. Says that the Sacremento group of friends are missing them and that Dr. Burk, the prsident of the club, raves about Mr. Markhams writings. Also Mrs. Briggs misses her terribly. Tells her that Verna Wood finished her play "Horatius". Asks whether she evers meets Mrs. Maitland who is at Columbia.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
